The Cinnamon Peeler

Following are the opening lines from Michael Ondaatje’s poem The Cinnamon Peeler which can be found in the book of the same name.  I highly recommend tracking the book down for that poem alone (although the other poems are enjoyable).  Perhaps it is the full moon about to rise tonight, but in re-reading The Cinnamon Peeler, I found it to be one of the most sensual and sensuous poems that I have read in a long time.  Enjoy.

“If I were a cinnamon peeler

I would ride your bed

and leave the yellow bark dust

on your pillow.

Your breasts and shoulders would reek

you could never walk through markets

without the profession of my fingers

floating over you.”
